RIO DE JANEIRO -- David Rudisha glanced to his left twice as he came round the final bend, waiting for the challenge to come. It didnt. He didnt let it.The world-record holder surged across the line to retain his Olympic title in the 800 meters on Monday, giving no one else a chance and becoming the first man in more than half a century to win back-to-back golds over two laps at the games. This is one of my greatest moments, to come here and defend my title, Rudisha said. There is nothing as great for an athlete as to maintain his performance.Rudisha won in 1 minute, 42.15 seconds, nothing on the incredible 1:40.91 he produced for his wire-to-wire win in London four years ago. But this was always going to be about the medal and not the clock, especially after a heavy downpour earlier in the evening left Rudisha and the others with a damp track at the Olympic Stadium. If theres one thing the Kenyan hates, its running in the wet.Rudisha still won well from Algerias Taoufik Makhloufi, who ran a national record time of 1:42.61 to add an 800 silver here to his gold in the 1,500 at the last Olympics. Clayton Murphy powered through in the final 50 meters for bronze and a PB of 1:42.93, overhauling Frances Pierre-Ambroise Bosse on his way to a long-awaited podium finish for the U.S. It was the first medal in the 800 for an American since Johnny Gray in 1992.Super exciting to race him, Murphy said of Rudisha, and hopefully not the last time I get to race him.Rudisha smiled at the end, a broad, beaming smile, relieved maybe after what started as a trying season when he lost a couple of times in the Diamond League and was beaten into third -- third! -- at the Kenyan trials. He freely offered up hugs to the other medalists, too, as he draped the red, black and green Kenyan flag across his shoulders once again. His legacy as one of the greatest 800 runners was pretty firm already, but he cemented it in Rio de Janeiro: The 27-year-old Rudisha has now won four of the last five major titles and the only one missing -- the 2013 worlds -- he was injured for. With no strong challenger coming at him -- not in this race and not in any general sense, either -- Rudisha has the potential to make history with a third straight gold in four years in Tokyo. He wants to be the best, he is the best at it, he knows hes the best, said American Boris Berian, who was eighth. Its that confidence right there. He takes it out and he has that confidence to hold on.Rudishas teammate, Alfred Kipketer, set a fast pace from the start -- like a bullet, Rudisha said -- and the defending champion had to hold himself back from getting into an early scrap. Instead, Rudisha waited for the back straight to stretch out his long legs and move past Kipketer. He built a cushion, not a big one, but he never seemed likely to get caught. Those two quick looks to the left as he approached the home straight let him know that he had it.Richard Snell of New Zealand was the last man to retain his Olympic title in the 800, at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Some formidable recent 800 runners, including current IAAF President Sebastian Coe and Wilson Kipketer, didnt even win once in the 800 at the Olympics. Coe, an Olympic champion at 1,500, consistently says that Rudisha is one of the best athletes the sport has had.For Rudisha, this victory was absolute confirmation, if he needed it, that hes deserving of such praise from former champions. Rudisha himself could be confirmation, his country really does need it, that Kenyas distance-running culture of grass-roots talent and hard work is not being taken over by doping. The Olympics comes only every four years, Rudisha said. It means you have to be very disciplined, dedicated, focused and do the right thing to get here.---Follow Gerald Imray on Twitter at https://twitter.com/GeraldImrayAP---Follow the Rio Games at http://www.summergames.ap.org/Cheap Custom Bucks Jersey . Boucher previously coached the Tampa Bay Lightning and had a 97-78-20 record over two-plus seasons. He was dismissed by the team last March after the Lightning struggled in the lockout-shortened season with a 13-18-1 record. Wholesale Custom Bucks Shirts . The Canadian squad, skipped by Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg, got on the board first with two in the second end, and followed that with two more apiece in the fourth and sixth ends. http://www.custombucksjersey.com/ . -- Nate Robinson has played for seven teams, so beating one of them is no longer a rare occurrence. Oscar Robertson Jersey Large . Most important, perhaps, it went off without a hitch. Organizers poked a little fun at the now-infamous opening ceremony gaffe that saw only four out of five snowflakes open up into rings, leaving the Olympics logo one ring short. "We talked about wanting to be disciplined and stick with our game plan and good things will come," Draisaitl said, who had two goals for the victors. OXNARD, Calif. -- Ezekiel Elliott leaves the field to screams of Zeeeeeke! from autograph-seeking fans who havent even seen him carry the ball in a game yet for the Dallas Cowboys. The fourth overall pick in this years draft opened his first training camp taking first-team snaps before a mild hamstring strain put him on the sidelines with Darren McFadden, who led the team in rushing last season but still could be replaced as the starter even after he returns from a broken right elbow. If hes healthy and not sidelined over a domestic violence allegation in Ohio, Elliott is likely to begin his career in a way that Cowboys Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith and Tony Dorsett didnt: starting the opener as a rookie running back.Even if he doesnt start in his debut, the former Ohio State star is the future of the running game for a once-proud franchise now 20 years removed from its last Super Bowl. Hes high on a list of non-quarterbacks that were taken in the first two rounds and could play significant roles right away.Im just doing what theyre asking me to do, said Elliott, taken two spots after quarterbacks Jared Goff (Rams) and Carson Wentz (Eagles) went 1-2 in the draft. At running back were down a couple bodies right now, but we got to come together and get in shape and lean on each other right now.Elliott waited a day to face the expected swarm of reporters while knowing the conversation would quickly turn to the case in Columbus, Ohio, where his girlfriend accused him of assaulting her about a week before camp opened. The 21-year-old Elliott has denied the claims.Looking a bit winded at times during his first two days in camp, Elliott also struggled with Ohio States school song and was forced into a second night of singing in front of his teammates -- a popular rookie initiation in NFL camps. They can be all-conference in the biggest conferences there are, they can be All-American, they can win Heisman trophies. And then they step into this environment, its a step up, coach Jason Garrett said. We certainly like the transition that Zeke has made up to this point.A look at other picks that werent quarterbacks but could have significant impacts nonetheless:ELI APPLE, NY GIANTS: The 10th selection was Elliotts former teammate at Ohio State and is now an NFC East rival. He is rotating at cornerback with veterans Janoris Jenkins and Dominique-Rodgers Cromartie, and first-year coach Ben McAdoo isnt hesitating to start rookies after former coach Tom Coughlin rarely did in 12 seasons. Everything is happening really fast, said Apple, one of three Buckeyes taken in the top 10. The meetings are reaally long, but I am having fun with it.ddddddddddddLAREMY TUNSIL, MIAMI: The 13th choice out of Mississippi became one of the biggest stories on draft night when his stock fell after a video of him taking a bong hit in a gas mask circulated on social media. Hes making the transition from left tackle to left guard and might not start the opener. We were talking about how training camp is going to be another speed, coach Adam Gase said. Preseason is going to feel like another speed. And then when you hit the regular season, its a completely different speed.RYAN KELLY, INDIANAPOLIS: The 18th selection out of Alabama is the first center the Colts have taken in the opening round since Auburns Jackie Burkett in 1959, and Burkett never played the position. Indianapolis has used five starters at center in four seasons with Andrew Luck, who has been hit more times (375) than any quarterback in that span. I think playing center, obviously I think you have to have a sense of leadership, Kelly said. But at the same time I think you have to establish yourself as a good player and kind of walk the walk before you can say stuff as a leader.LAQUON TREADWELL, MINNESOTA: The 23rd pick from Mississippi made an impression by frequently catching extra passes after practice and as the first player to arrive on reporting day at camp. The receiver is still trying to regain his explosiveness from a lower left leg injury at Ole Miss in 2014, part of the reason he was available late in the first round. Treadwell still had 1,153 yards and 11 touchdowns coming off the devastating injury. Laquon will remain a student of the game and learn from guys in that room, quarterback Teddy Bridgewater said.MYLES JACK, JACKSONVILLE: The former UCLA linebacker slipped to the 36th overall pick in the second round because of uncertainty about his right knee. He tore the meniscus on Sept. 23 and left school shortly thereafter to rehab in Phoenix. He missed offseason workouts because of NFL rules regarding college graduations, leaving him way behind at the June minicamp, and still struggling to catch up when camp opened. Dealing with Floridas sweltering summer heat and humidity has been as much of an issue as learning the playbook. Im having fun playing football again, Jack said. But I definitely need to get in better shape, get more reps and catch up.---Online:AP NFL websites: http://pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP-NFL---Follow Schuyler Dixon on Twitter at https://twitter.com/apschuyler ' ' '
