MOUNT TREBEVIC, Bosnia-Herzegovina -- Sports enthusiasts and former athletes in Bosnia have taken it upon themselves to reclaim some of the glory Sarajevo savored as host of the 1984 Olympics -- and in the process rekindled the flame of international cooperation.Since the country lacks the resources to rebuild the Olympic facilities that were destroyed in the deadly war that followed the breakup of Yugoslavia, volunteers bought tools, rolled up their sleeves and got to work.At first, they planned to restore the bobsled and luge track on Mount Trebevic just so it could be used by the Bosnian national team for summer training. But the previously abandoned facility became a draw for athletes from throughout Europe. We bought some tools with our own money and started cleaning the track from vegetation, debris and mud, Senad Omanovic, the head of Bosnias Bobsleigh Federation, recalled. We had trees growing out of the track. The 1992-95 Bosnian war was the most brutal conflict on European soil since World War II. It took over 100,000 lives and turned more than half the population into refugees. It also trashed the decade-old Olympic facilities on the mountains around Sarajevo, venues residents once proudly looked up to from downtown as symbols of one of the citys most glorious moments. During the war, Sarajevans hid from the artillery and snipers Bosnian Serbs had placed on the Dinaric Alps.War turned the bobsled and luge track on Mount Trebevic, overlooking Sarajevo, into a concrete skeleton that eventually became covered with graffiti and trash. Little remains of the ski-jump facilities on Mount Igman, another site of fierce fighting. The mens downhill courses on Bjelasnica were resurrected as the citys main ski resort, but only after the land mines around them were cleared. It took Omanovic and his teammates years to clean the bob- and luge track where in 1984 teams from the German Democratic Republic took the gold and silver medals. They could only approach the Trebevic track after mine-removal experts cleared its entire length. As word spread through Eastern Europe that the Olympic track had been fixed up, teams in other countries approached Omanovic to ask about practicing there. The first was from Slovakia.Omanovic recalled frankly telling the Slovaks the facility lacked locker rooms, timing sensors and even toilets. They insisted the Sarajevo track, despite its rough history and condition, was among the best of the nine tracks available around the world for summer training.Tackling the course on wheeled equipment, racers can achieve speeds of 130 kilometers (81 miles) per hour. After Slovakia, teams from Poland, Turkey, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia followed. So this became a regional training center, said Omanovic, who now hopes the track will one day achieve its old glory.Jacob Simonek, a member of the Slovakian team that has practiced in Sarajevo six times now, said the track was a bit bumpy but good despite its age and battle scars. On the other end of town, the ski-jump facilities on Mount Igman still stand as sad relics of war.Selver Merdanovic, a former ski jumper for Bosnia, has started working to revive the two small jumps so the 15 children from his club team can practice there. Rebuilding the high jumps, an expensive endeavor, remains a distance dream.Im trying to return this sport to Bosnia, Merdanovic said. I wish this to be my legacy.---Aida Cerkez in Sarajevo contributed to this story. Custom Titans Jerseys . MONTREAL -- For a player who had just sat out two games with a virus, Alexander Radulov had plenty of energy. The Russian winger set up goals by linemates Paul Byron and Alex Galchenyuk as the Montreal Canadiens ended a three-game skid with a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night.Montreal (14-3-2) has won 12 straight games against its oldest rival dating to Jan. 18, 2014.Radulov was all over the ice in his return, picking up two assists and skating hard at both ends. He had missed games Tuesday against Florida and Friday at Carolina with an illness that he first felt during a 3-2 loss last Sunday in Chicago. It was bad, said Radulov, whose 16 points in 17 games place him second on the team in scoring to Galchenyuk. I had a fever. ... In Chicago, I felt it in the morning but it wasnt that bad. But it got worse overnight and I went to the hospital. But I battled through.Having a healthy Radulov back seemed to pick up the entire team. The Canadiens needed that, as well as Carey Prices 31 saves, in an entertaining, end-to-end game against the quick, young Maple Leafs.Radulov, a former Nashville Predator, has been a pleasant surprise for Montreal since he signed a one-year deal as a free agent in the summer after playing four seasons in the KHL.Weve all been around people who have that kind of energy, and its contagious, Canadiens defenseman Shea Weber, not intending a pun, said of Radulov. That be-positive attitude. Guys feed off that. Its not an act. Its who he is.As coach Michel Therrien put it: Hes intense. He loves practice. He loves meetings. He loves the game.William Nylander scored for the Maple Leafs (8-7-3), who were coming off a pair of home wins in which they totaled 12 goals. They pushed hard in the third period, but couldnt get a second goal past Price. Were happy with the way we battled at the end, Toronto defenseman Morgan Reilly said. We were right there the whole game.It wwas a one-shot difference.dddddddddddd To keep it close was good, but you want to get one at the end there and tie it up and at least get a point. The Maple Leafs got another good effort from goalie Frederik Andersen, who faced 29 shots and had little chance on either goal he allowed.Freddies been outstanding, Reilly said. Its about us giving him the support he needs. We have a lot of confidence in him. Hes earned it.Byron was on the doorstep to jam the rebound of Shea Webers shot past Andersen at 15:45 of the first period. It was the diminutive wingers seventh goal of the season, only four shy of his career high. The Canadiens were 5 seconds into a power play when Galchenyuk also got his seventh of the season. He won a faceoff back to Weber, who slid the puck to Radulov on the right wing for a perfect feed in front. Galchenyuk put the puck into an open side 32 seconds into the second.Toronto struck back on the man advantage at 8:47 on an equally sweet three-way passing play, this time in tight traffic as the puck went from Auston Matthews to Leo Komarov to Nylander alone on the right side for his sixth of the season.Theyve got a skilled, young team, Weber said. Theyre good on the power play and theyve got speed.I thought we did a good job of staying behind them and taking away that speed a bit.It was the second meeting this season between the rivals. The Canadiens also won 2-1 at home on Oct. 29. Their next two matchups are in Toronto on Jan. 7 and Feb. 25.Game notes Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty played his 500th NHL game. ... Martin Marincin, Peter Holland and Frank Corrado were scratched for Toronto, while Montreal sat out Daniel Carr and Greg Pateryn.UP NEXTMaple Leafs: Host the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night.Canadiens: Host the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night.
