SALT LAKE CITY -- Things are looking a bit grim for USC.The Trojans are 1-2 and now they face No. 24 Utah on the road Friday. A loss to the Utes would make for the Trojans first 1/3 start since 2001. An 0-2 start to Pac-12 play would mean USC would likely need to go undefeated in its remaining conference games just to have a chance at a league title. And now coach Clay Helton is switching quarterbacks. Redshirt freshman Sam Darnold will make his first start for the Trojans, replacing Max Browne. The 6-foot-4, 225-pounder has played in all three games and thrown for 136 yards, two touchdowns, one interception and completed 63.6 percent of his passes. Darnold also provides a running threat.I would not have made the change if I wasnt confident in the decision, Helton said. What he has done on that stage versus Alabama showing the poise he did, versus Stanford showing the poise he did, the anticipation he has shown in his throws, his knowledge of the offense right now, he is making plays.Cornerback Adoree Jackson said Helton had one message this week.In life theres only two things, you can be the answer or the one that makes excuses, Jackson said. So, obviously, we got to be the answer. On the opposite sideline, theres a little revenge at stake for the Utes. Utah was ranked No. 3 in the country in 2015 when a loss to USC started a downward spiral that ended with the Utes playing in the Las Vegas Bowl after at one time being in the conversation for the College Football Playoff.Theyre probably the most talented 1-2 team in the country, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. Theyre dangerous. Were fully aware of that. We dont really pay any attention to record. We know what their capabilities are. Were not stressing that we owe them or anything like that. ... Wed like to create some momentum going into league play.Things to watch when Utah hosts USC:SACK LAKE CITY: The Utes racked up 10 sacks against San Jose State last week and are ranked No. 2 in the country with 15 sacks overall. Ten different players have recorded a sack this year. Hunter Dimick leads the team with three.BUTLER-BYRD BACK: Utah receiver Cory Butler-Byrd returned from a suspension last week and caught five passes for 66 yards. The 5-foot-10 speedster is immediately the Utes second-best threat in the passing game and a complement to the 6-5 Tim Patrick.Hes fast, he can go down the field and catch the deep ball, quarterback Troy Williams said. Hell take a bubble (screen) for 80 (yards) if you let him. He adds that dimension of another big playmaker out there.QUOTABLE: No team respects our passing game, Patrick said. The first three teams we played, they all pressed us and they were all lower-division teams. So what do you think the bigger-division teams are going to do? Press us just like everybody else did. So were just going to have to show them that we can pass it, and once we do that I promise you theyll start backing up.HOME AGAIN: USC defensive tackle Stevie Tuikolovatu is a Salt Lake City native who played all 13 games with the Utes last season before transferring. Hes started all three games with the Trojans.I dont know if the fans will like me, but I know my friends still do, Tuikolovatu said. I think it will be pretty cool. I probably have like 50 tickets already, so I will probably need more than that. That whole USC side will probably be my family.---AP college football site: http://collegefootball.ap.org---Follow Kareem Copeland on Twitter: www.twitter.com/KareemCopelandAir Jordan 1 Retro High OG Banned Sail Mens . -- Lou Brocks shoulder-to-shoulder collision with Bill Freehan during the 1968 World Series and Pete Roses bruising hit on Ray Fosse in the 1970 All-Star game could become relics of baseball history, like the dead-ball era. But before committing to him, the team will wait to see how Matz feels Thursday. If he does take the ball, the rookie will likely be limited to around 50-60 pitches. He hasnt pitched in a month, so weve got to be very careful with how we approach it, Collins said.Right-hander Gabriel Ynoa would be in line to follow Matz against the Phillies. Ynoa made his first major league start Sunday versus Minnesota, allowing one run and striking out eight in 4 2/3 innings.Matz has not pitched since Aug. 14 because of tightness in his left shoulder. He initially was penciled in to return Sept. 1, but was scratched after feeling discomfort when playing catch a day after he threw off a mound.Matz had been pitching with a bone spur in his elbow before going on the disabled list last month. He is 9-8 with a 3.40 ERA in 22 starts this season for the Mets, tied with San Francisco and St. Louis for the two NL wild cards. In another injury update, New York starter Jacob deGrom had surgery Wednesday to reposition the ulnar nerve in his right elbow and is expected to be ready for spring training next year, the team said.Right-hander Matt Harvey also is out for the season following surgery to address thoracic outlet syndrome, and Zack Wheeler never made it back this year from Tommy John surgery in March 2015.WHERES WILMER?Collins indicated he is very concerned about infielder Wilmer Flores, who remained out of the lineup with a sore right wrist.Flores has not played since Sept. 10, when he was injured in a home-plate collision at Atlanta. Hes received two injections, the second one on Monday, but still was unable to swing a bat Wednesday, accoording to Collins.ddddddddddddProductive rookie T.J. Rivera started at second base again Wednesday night during a 4-3 loss to Atlanta.Flores is not expected back in time to play Thursday night against Philadelphia lefty Adam Morgan -- a major disappointment for the Mets. Flores is hitting .340 with 11 home runs in 100 at-bats vs. left-handers this season, including .393 with 25 RBI in his last 61 at-bats. His .710 slugging percentage against southpaws is the best mark in the majors among players with at least 85 at-bats.Not to mention, Flores hit a grand slam off Morgan on Aug. 26.BRUCE ON THE BENCHSlumping right fielder Jay Bruce was left out of the starting lineup for the third time in four games, one night after the three-time All-Star was pulled for a pinch hitter in a crucial situation. That move came with a left-handed reliever on the mound. This time, the left-handed-hitting Bruce was benched with rookie right-hander Ryan Weber starting for the Braves. Alejandro De Aza played center field, bumping Curtis Granderson back to right.Bruce struck out as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning. Before the game, he had little reaction to Collins decision to sit him.The results are just not there, and this is a results game, Bruce said. I still plan on being a big part of this hunt for the World Series here. This is just a blip.Acquired from Cincinnati at the Aug. 1 trade deadline, Bruce is batting only .175 with four homers and 11 RBI in 41 games with the Mets. He is hitless in his last 13 at-bats and stuck in a 3-for-39 slide. Yet his 29 home runs and 91 RBI still ranked 10th in the NL in both categories.Obviously, no one likes being booed, Bruce said. But I understand that theyre passionate. They expect a certain level of execution and performance out of me. ' ' '
