ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Four-time Iditarod champion and cancer survivor Lance Mackey has dropped out of next years nearly 1,000-mile race for health reasons, organizers said Monday.Mackey said in an email to the Iditarod Trail Committee that his withdrawal from the 2017 race across Alaska came with hopes to take better care of his health so he can be ready to compete again in 2018, marshal Mark Nordman told The Associated Press. The email was sent Sept. 21, but the employee who handles that correspondence was out, and Mackey was officially withdrawn Monday, the same day the committee announced the withdrawal, Nordman said.Mackey has continued to struggle with hand circulation problems that were partly blamed for him scratching from this years race.Hell be missed for sure, Nordman said of Mackeys decision to sit out the next race.Mackey could not immediately be reached for comment.Mackey was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2001 and underwent extensive surgery as well as radiation treatment. After returning to the sport, he went on to become the only musher ever to win both the Iditarod and the 1,000-mile Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race in the same year. Its a feat he has accomplished twice. With Mackey opting out, just four current and former champions are signed up for next years Iditarod.Part of Mackeys huge appeal along the trail likely has as much to do with his outsized personality as his past wins.Nordman noted the musher is a crowd favorite at village checkpoints along the trail and has also amassed a huge fan base.Hes got that upbeat attitude, Nordman said. But he realizes in order to take care of his dogs, hes got to have his health.---Follow Rachel DOro at https://twitter.com/rdoro---This story has been corrected to say Mackey scratched from the Iditarod this year, not last yearKole Calhoun Jersey . Hailing from this village that has given the country a bunch of Olympians and Arjuna awardees, weightlifting was destined to happen to Sathish Sivalingam. Anything else would have been unnatural, almost an aberration. His father, Sivalingam, is a former national-level weightlifter. His brother Pradeep too has taken to the sport.A little over a month ago, the 24-year-old Sathish lifted 151kg in snatch and 185kg in clean and jerk to finish on top at the selection trials in Patiala -- and earn himself a ticket to Rio.Two years ago in Glasgow, his 149kg snatch lift fetched him the Commonwealth Games gold, erasing the previous record of 148kg set by Yuko Peter of Nauru. The Tamil Nadu government promptly announced a cash reward of Rs 50 lakh.Taking up the sport at the age of 15, Sathish trained at Atlas gym, run by one of the two prominent Hindu castes in the village -- the Mutharaiyars. A rival gym, bearing the unlikely name of Mahatma Gandhi, is the property of the Seguntha Mudaliiars.ddddddddddddSixteen years ago, Karnam Malleswari had lifted the profile of weightlifting in India with a bronze in the 69kg category at the Sydney Games. She remains the only weightlifter from the country to have had a podium finish at the Olympics. But that success has largely been seen as a one-off. Four years ago, Indian lifters put up a dismal show in London, with N Soniya Chanu finishing seventh in the womens 48kg category and Katulu Ravi Kumar settling for sixth place among 10 participants in the 69kg Group B competition. No wonder hopes are measured this time -- despite both Sathish and Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, the other Indian lifter going to Rio, showing considerable promise recently. But Sivalingam, a former armyman, trusts his son will live up to the aspirations of Sathuvachari and Vellore, where his predecessors had honed their skills with the help of stone pestles. Sathish will achieve what I never could, Sivalingam says. Hell return with a medal. Its more than mere hope. Its belief. ' ' '
