TORONTO -- NHL meetings are set for this week to discuss whether the league will participate in the 2018 Olympics in South Korea.League officials will meet with the International Ice Hockey Federation in New York on Wednesday. Deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the NHL hopes to learn if any traction has been made between the IIHF and the International Olympic Committee with regard to potential sticking points, including money issues. NHL officials have expressed concerns that the IOC is not willing to cover out-of-pocket payments it took care of at the past five Olympics.NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said those costs were upward of $10 million during a two-week hiatus next season.I cant imagine the NHL owners are willing to pay for the privilege of shutting down for 17 days, Bettman said Monday at the Prime Time Sports Management Conference in Toronto. I just dont see that.If the IOC is not willing to figure out the expenses, Daly said, the NHL and NHL players association will have to jointly determine whether to proceed with participation in a sixth consecutive Winter Games.Bettman said a decision would need to be made by early January at the latest. He also took aim at the restrictive policies of the IOC with regard to the Olympics. Were not allowed to be associated with the Olympics. Were not allowed to promote that were there. Were not allowed to use the trademarks and logos. Were not allowed to use the footage, he said. The IOC says this is the way were going to do it. `Were not going to pay. You cant do this. You cant do that. It doesnt give you the warm and fuzzies.NHL and NHLPA officials recently visited the Olympic site in Pyeongchang, believing it to be suitable for international competition.Mets Jerseys China . A father of two in Chicago that listens to sports talk radio, Kinsella never seemed like a frontman that would bolster a rock god-esque following, but something unexpected happened following the release of American Footballs first and only album in 1999: The band went their separate ways and the record grew to become much larger than the band, dubbed one of the best selling records to date by label Polyvinyl, and featured in a variety of skate and BMX videos. Their songs gained critical acclaim for their confessional, hushed approach; and the album became an essential on many best of post-rock/emo lists.American Football left a mark that never escaped Kinsella, who continued to play music under the moniker Owen. On occasion, during live Owen shows, after being haggled by the audience to play American Football songs, Kinsella would falsely break into the beginning of the American Football song Never Meant before trailing off and quizzing the crowd about their favorite TV shows or who was playing Words with Friends. But he was moving forward as a solo songwriter, with over a dozen releases under his belt spanning from 2001 to the present, including this years excellent The King of Whys. Thee band, the songs he wrote haphazardly in college and recorded in 1998, were the past and Mike Kinsella, the father, the solo songwriter, the brother of Tim appearing in Joan of Arc videos as the fake singer, was the present.ddddddddddddThen, in early 2014, the unexpected happened. Polyinvyl was set to release a deluxe reissue of the first American Football album, and with it came the news that the band would be playing live. Ive been saying no long enough that I forgot why I was saying no, said Kinsella. He wasnt running away from American Football anymore.Following a string of live shows in 2014 and 2015, American Football as a band realized that their chemistry still existed. The band also realized that for more live opportunities to occur, they would have to reach beyond their initial output of songs. A Dropbox folder was created, ideas were shared, and Kinsellas cousin Nate was added on bass. Nine new songs were conceived, mirroring American Footballs past while embracing more expansive sounds and lyrically diverse themes. You cant just forget all the other lives youve lived, sings Kinsella, and this new record proves that hes not.But a day before the release of LP 2, Mike Kinsella isnt thinking about the new record or the weird turn of events that transformed a college band named American Football into a coveted treasure. Hes making jokes about the Disney TV shows his children watch on Twitter and putting up new cedar panels in his house. Hes thinking about the present.American Footballs LP 2 is on sale on Oct. 21.
