Norway almost looked to have a victory and first place in Group A wrapped up in its group stage finale against Italy on Tuesday. After almost a full 90 minutes of goalless play, Italian captain Luca Caldirola brought down Norwegian captain Stefan Strandberg on a cross into the box. Croatian referee Ivan Bebek judged the foul enough to warrant a penalty kick. Strandberg walked up himself and coolly buried the ball into the bottom left corner for his first ever competitive goal in 24 matches for Norways under-21 squad. By time the dust settled on Sandbergs goal, Norway was looking at a 1-0 advantage in the matchs 90th minute, but Italy still found a way to break through in added time. The hero for Italy this time around would be second half substitute Andrea Bertolacci, who lifted a shot over both Strandberg and Norwegian keeper Arild Ostbo to equalize on what would prove to be the final touch of the match. The result gave Italy first place in Group A with seven points through three games, while Norway claimed second in the group with five points – one win and two draws – through its opening three matches. Meanwhile, Israel and England faced off in what was from the opening whistle almost certain to be a consolation match. England was mathematically eliminated heading in and Israel needed an Italy win and a dramatic shift in goal differential to emerge from Group A. After a scoreless first half, Israel had a golden opportunity to get on the board when Nir Bitons shot from 30 metres out beat England keeper Jason Steele but rattled off the crossbar. Israels breakthrough came from an Omri Altman shot from just outside the box. The midfielders strike skipped past Steeles outstretched hand and into the lower right corner of the net in the 80th minute giving the hosts a 1-0 lead. The hosts would hold on to the lead for a thrilling victory in front of a packed Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem. Israel has bowed out of the tournament, but not before claiming a win in front of its home fans. England, meanwhile, bows out of the tournament without a win, having gone 0-3 and scoring just once along the way.Sadio Mane Jersey . -- Playing time has been limited for Maxim Tissot this season, so the Montreal Impact defender made the most of his first scoring opportunity on Saturday. Her overall record this year is 11-11.Its been a tough year in general, Wozniacki said, taking a philosophical tone. Its been some injuries. Its been some bad draws. Its been uphill. But you just have to keep fighting, keep going at it, keep working hard, and hope eventually thats going to turn and youre going to take the chances youre going to get.Thats really all you can do right now, she said.Wozniacki was ranked No. 1 for 67 weeks in 2010 and 2011 and reached two Grand Slam finals, finishing runner-up at the 2009 and 2014 U.S. Opens. This was her 10th appearance at Wimbledon, where she has reached the fourth round five times but never made it to the quarterfinals.Coming off the ankle injury, Wozniacki showed progress at the grass-court warmup tournament at Eastbourne, winning back-to-back matches for the first time since February. I thought I played some really good tennis in Eastbourne, she said. Obviously (I) was hoping I could step up from there and do more damage today. But it wasnt enough.Wozniacki played well against Kuznetsova, also a former No. 1 player. She pushed the Russian but didnt have enough tto overcome her in a match played with the retractable roof closed over Centre Court because of rain.dddddddddddd.She played aggressively and stepped up when she had to, Wozniacki said. She did what she had to do today. For now, Wozniacki is planning to play hard-court tournaments in Washington and Montreal.Shes also awaiting a ruling on the appeal on her eligibility for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Wozniacki has been selected as Denmarks flag-bearer for the games, but has failed to meet the International Tennis Federations Fed Cup requirements.Obviously I want to play, she said. But if they decide that Im not going to play, then theres not much I can do about it.In addition to the injuries, losses and drop in the rankings, Wozniacki endured a well-publicized breakup in 2014 with golfer Rory McIlroy.Referring to the last year-and-a-half in general, she said: I mean, at one point youre just like, you know what, it has to turn, it has to go the other way eventually. Im just going to take the punches Im getting and just try and learn from it and try and move forward.During her injury layoffs, Wozniacki has kept busy with various off-the-court projects. If theres time left over, then I try and just have fun in life, she said. We only live once. We dont get a mulligan. One thing Wozniacki wont do is read about herself.I think if I read everything that was written about me the last 15 years, I think by now I probably would have jumped over a cliff, she said. I would rather not.---Stephen Wilson can be followed at www.twitter.com/stevewilsonap ' ' '
