BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Ville Leino was happy to bask in some rare cheers after netting the winning goal in the shootout. "Today was awesome," Leino said after scoring in the ninth round of the shootout to give the Buffalo Sabres a 3-2 win over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night. "Obviously we havent been winning that much, so its tough times but those kind of moments, you get a little extra energy." Leino had not scored a goal in regulation all season and has been the subject of catcalls in Buffalo, but drew a roar of approval with his shootout tally. When asked why he tabbed Leino to shoot, Buffalo coach Ted Nolan cited necessity as the reason he used the slumping forward. "He played a real good game for us tonight, and we were running out of forwards," Nolan said. "Hes had a tough, tough go, but hes a real good player and I was glad to see him get one." Tyler Ennis scored twice in the third period and again in the shootout, while Nathan Lieuwen made 33 saves for his first NHL win. Dainius Zubrus gave New Jersey a 1-0 lead at 8:16 of the second period and Tuomo Ruutu tipped Andy Greenes shot past Lieuwen at 6:58 of the third to tie it 2-2. The Devils, 0-11 this season in shootouts, are three points out of the Eastern Conferences final wild card spot. "We had a bunch of chances to score and we have guys who are good in the shootout," Zubrus said. "Tough to say its luck because its been 11 games in a row, but maybe a bit of bad luck has to be there." Cory Schneider made 25 saves for New Jersey. The Devils outshot Buffalo 10-8 in the opening period, but dominated possession and had the best chances. New Jersey broke the deadlock in the second, when Michael Ryders cross-crease pass appeared to be knocked into the Sabres goal by Jamie McBain. The goal was awarded to Zubrus. Lieuwen returned to form after the goal, making a diving stick save on Ryder to keep the score 1-0. Moments later, he stopped Ruutu on a partial breakaway. "The one word that Teddy keeps using is compete," Lieuwen said. "I just went out there and competed. Good things happened." The Sabres managed just four shots in the second period. Buffalo got the equalizer 1:39 into the third period on a play started by Drew Stafford and completed by a cross-slot pass from Leino to Ennis, who scored on a wrist shot to become the first Sabres player to score 20 goals this season. "Hes a dynamic player," Nolan said. "He scoots in and out, and for him to get that 20, its a magical number he was waiting on for a while." Buffalo took its first lead of the night on a power play just over three minutes later. Cody Hodgson slid a pass through several players to Ennis, who shot high into the net at 4:41. "He made a pretty ridiculous pass through two or three guys right on my tape," Ennis said. "I just had to throw it on the net." New Jersey tied the score on the power play, when Ruutu deflected Greenes shot past Lieuwen. Lieuwen made back-to-back stops on Adam Henrique and Patrik Elias with just over a minute left in overtime. He then had a chance to win the game after Stafford scored in the fourth round of the shootout. "I had a Welcome to the NHL moment when Jagr came down on me with a chance to win the game and I think I was a little too excited about what was happening," Lieuwen said. But after Leino scored, Lieuwen rebounded to pick up that first win with a stop on Mike Sislo that he doesnt quite remember. "I blacked out," Lieuwen said. "The guy came in and as soon as I made that save, I was just all smiles. I was excited and Im very grateful." Buffalo snapped a four-game skid with the win, while the Devils now have points in five consecutive games. ROME -- Giuseppe Rossi scored a hat trick Sunday as Fiorentina came back from two goals down to stun two-time defending champion and fierce rival Juventus 4-2 in Serie A. Carlos Tevez and Paul Pogba gave Juventus a 2-0 halftime lead but Rossi struck back with goals in the 66th, 76th and 80th and Spanish forward Joaquin added his first Serie A strike in the 78th. "Its difficult to score against Juve and even more diffiult to score four times," Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella said. "Coming against a historic rival, this was a marvelous and splendid Sunday." Rossi has eight goals through eight rounds. The United States-born forward was recently called back into Italys national team after two years of injuries and three surgeries. "The goals were great but we really reacted well as a squad in the second half," Rossi said. "We showed a lot of courage and a lot of heart. We can play with anyone." Rossis father, Fernando, died in 2010. "Rossi has had two tough years both family-wise and injury-wise," Fiorentina captain Manuel Pasqual said. "He deserved a day like this." After its first loss, Juventus remained tied with Napoli five points behind Roma, which beat Napoli 2-0 Friday to extend its winning start to eight matches. Promoted Hellas Verona is fifth after beating Parma 3-2 with a goal from Fabrizio Cacciatore and two penalties from Jorginho -- one earned by former Italy forward Luca Toni. Fiorentina is tied for fifth with Inter Milan, which drew 3-3 at Torino with only 10 men in its first match since an announced takeover of the club by a group of Indonesian entrepreneurs. Fiorentina is sixth. In other matches, it was: Atalanta 2, Lazio 1; Genoa 2, Chievo Verona 1; Livorno 1, Sampdoria 2; Sassuolo 2, Bologna 1. Fiorentina had not beaten Juventus at home since December, 1998, when Gabriel Batistuta was the clubs key scorer. "For our fans, its as if we won a trophy today," Pasqual said. Juventus, meanwhile, doesnt have much time to regroup, with a match at Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday. "The match was closed," Juventus coach Antonio Conte said. "Then something unthinkable happened. We lost a match that we were dominating. But thats football. ... We need to learn something from this.dddddddddddd." In Florence, it was all Juventus until Mati Fernandez was fouled by Kwadwo Asamoah to set up a penalty for Rossi in the 66th. Ten minutes later, Rossi appeared to surprise Gianluigi Buffon with a shot from beyond the area that the Juventus and Italy goalkeeper should have stopped. Joaquin was then left all alone inside the area to make it 3-2 and Rossi rounded out a career performance by finishing off a counterattack with Juan Cuadrado. In the 85th, Rossi exited to a well-earned standing ovation. It was quite a turnaround from the first half. Juventus playmaker Andrea Pirlo hit the crossbar in the 14th and the visitors took control when Tevez was fouled by Gonzalo Rodriguez at the edge of the area to set up a penalty for the Argentina forward in the 37th Pogba doubled Juves lead three minutes later by volleying in after Cuadrados clearing attempt went straight up into the air. In Turin, Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic was sent off for tripping Alessio Cerci five minutes in but reserve goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo came on and blocked Cercis penalty. Swedish midfielder Alexander Farnerud gave Torino the lead in the 21st and Fredy Guarin responded for Inter in first-half added time with a spectacular bicycle kick following a corner. Ciro Immobile restored Torinos lead in the 53rd but Rodrigo Palacio replied two minutes later with a header at the edge of the box after goalkeeper Daniele Padelli failed to punch away a cross. Palacio scored again to give Inter a 3-2 lead in the 71st by tapping in a cross from Ishak Belfodil for his fifth of the season but Torino midfielder Nicola Bellomo equalized with a long, curling free kick into the far, top corner in the 90th for his first career goal in Serie A. Earlier in Bergamo, midfielder Luca Cigarini scored one goal and set up another as Atalanta won its third straight. Cigarini put the hosts ahead in the 41st with a long, low shot then provided the through ball for German Denis winner in the 84th. Lazios 20-year-old Colombian forward Brayan Perea had equalized in the 53rd with his first Italian league goal.
