TORONTO -- Former national team members Andrea Blackwell, Bill Coulthard and Candace Jirik are being inducted into the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame. "Andrea, Bill and Candace were great players on the court and wonderful people off of it," Michele OKeefe, executive director of Canada Basketball, said Wednesday. "I am proud that their dedication to the game and their commitment to this country will forever be remembered with a place alongside Canadas basketball legends." Blackwell grew up in Calgary but her basketball career took off in Kingston, Ont., where she played on the LaSalle Secondary School junior girls team. She later won back-to-back national championships in 1983-84 with Bishops University, and won the Nan Copp Award as the countrys most outstanding player in her senior year. She spent 17 years on the junior and senior national teams, including four world championship appearances and a bronze medal in 1986 plus two Olympics. Coulthard was born in Buffalo, N.Y., but made his home in Windsor, Ont., and played at both the Detroit Institute of Technology and Assumption College. Later, as a member of the Tillsonburg Livingstons, he helped win the 1952 Senior Canadian Championship and the right to represent Canada at that summers Olympic Games in Helsinki. Jirik was a three-time Ontario Womens Interuniversity Athletic Association all-star and all-Canadian in 1978 and 1980, and her Guelph Gryphons finished the 1980 season with a perfect 12-0 record and the Ontario championship. She was a member of the senior womens national team from 1977-80 and again from 1982-84 and was with them in 1979 when they captured bronze in each of the FIBA World Championship, the FISU Games and the Pan-American Games.
